Tessera Technologies

Problem:
Tessera was an unprofitable, nine year old startup with relatively flat revenue. The company derived revenue from three sources: package development, prototype assembly and intellectual property licenses and royalties. They were known and compensated for their invention of the mBGA package, but not for their breakthrough patents that applied to a much broader range of products and applications.

Solution:
We worked with managment to develop a new company strategy that included positioning Tessera purely as an advanced semiconductor packaging intellectual property company enabling miniaturization and performance of a broad range of electronic products. It also encompassed the broad range of products that their core intellectual property enabled and focused on fast-growing, high-volume applications, such as wireless communications and memory chips. We developed a new brand identity around this positioning and deployed it internally and externally. In addition, we recently helped to position the company for their recent IPO and develop their S-1 document.

Result:
The company raised a $35M mezzanine round of funding, significantly grew its wireless business, consistently grew revenues and profits, and achieved a successful IPO.
